Many Republicans are fuming mad at President Donald Trump and the party overall after their massive wipeout in the midterms, and now, the mayor of Oklahoma City has weighed in with his own take, trashing his own party as "morally and intellectually bankrupt."
David Holt has served as mayor of Oklahoma City since 2018 and has often been described as a much more moderate Republican than the rest of his party, having opposed much of Trump's MAGA movement throughout his career. Some observers have noted that he is the only sort of Republican who could manage to stay elected in a major urban center in the modern political environment, even one in a state as red as Oklahoma.
In the wake of the party's thrashing at the hands of Democrats Tuesday night, Holt took to his official X account to chastise the rest of the GOP, arguing that they deserved this stinging "rebuke" and urging people of all political stripes to come together to create a new form of "MAGA."
"A political party that is morally and intellectually bankrupt deserves the rebuke of the American people," Holt wrote in the post. "It is now time to make America good again."
He continued: "That is an endeavor to which all Americans can contribute, for we are not Democrats, Republicans or Independents. We are humans, and the things that unite us far exceed the things that divide us. We are the caretakers of the American experiment, and the experiment has been rejuvenated tonight."
As The Hill noted in its report on Holt's remarks, his own state, one of the most conservative in the union, was one of the few that had good news for Republicans on Election Night, with Rep. David Hern defeating Democratic nominee N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas in the state's Senate race. Just beyond its borders, however, the story was much different.
"However, in the neighboring states of Texas and Kansas, Democrats secured historic wins," The Hill detailed. :Texas Democratic candidates James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa defeated their Republican opponents, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott, respectively, in the state’s Senate and gubernatorial races. Talarico will be the first Democrat to hold a Senate seat in the Lone Star State since 1988. In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton defeated incumbent Sen. Roger Marshall. Hamilton will be the first Democratic senator from the Sunflower State since 1939."
Holt easily won his own reelection back in February, with the mayorship not up for grabs again until 2030.
