President Donald Trump’s confused response to questioning last week was a sign that he “doesn’t know what’s going on” in the face of grave threats from U.S. adversaries. This is according to his niece, psychologist Mary L. Trump, who responded on Monday to her uncle’s surprise at reports that China is sending weapons to Iran.
Trump was speaking with reporters in the Oval Office last week when he was asked about a new report that Iran was expected to receive its first shipment of hundreds of Chinese-made shoulder-fired air-defense missile launchers. "Well, that would be surprising,” responded Trump. “I mean, things like that happen, but that would be surprising. He [Chinese President Xi Jinping] told me very strongly he wouldn't partake, but he knows I'd be quite disappointed.”
“What’s he telling us there?” asked Mary Trump. “He doesn’t know what’s going on.” If this is the case, she says, President Xi lied to Trump, and the latter bought it or is simply oblivious altogether. Another possibility, according to Mary Trump: her uncle knew that he was being lied to, and is now pretending otherwise.
But there’s another key thing to consider: “Iran is about to get more weaponry with which to attack U.S. troops and our allies,” notes Mary Trump. President Trump, however, doesn’t seem to care, shrugging it off as a disappointment.
As Newsweek explains, “A Chinese company is set to supply Iran with hundreds of portable anti-air missile systems as the Islamic Republic seeks to rebuild air defenses devastated by United States and Israeli strikes, according to Reuters. The report comes just days after U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated that Chinese leader Xi Jinping had assured him Chinese firms would not arm Tehran.”
While Trump has been adamant that China, including Chinese companies, would not supply weapons to Iran, “Chinese-made systems such as the C-802 anti-ship cruise missile, and Iranian derivatives based on its design, have been used by Iran and supplied to its proxy, the Yemen-based Houthis, who in recent days have fired rockets at Saudi oil tankers as part of a blockade they declared in the Red Sea over the kingdom's military strikes in Yemen. In February, shortly before the U.S. and Israel launched their offensive, Reuters reported Iran was nearing a deal to acquire China's CM-302 supersonic anti-ship missile.”
According to Mary Trump, the president is incapable of handling the situation, concluding, “All Donald thinks he needs to do to get his way is act very disappointed.”
