CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins zeroed in on President Trump’s all-too-familiar response to the GOP midterm wipeout on Tuesday.
Democrats performed as expected or better as they seized control of both chambers of Congress overnight, locking down at least 54 Senate seats and winning a House majority. As the results rolled in, Collins pointed out the deja vu moment in Trump’s reaction.
“President Trump tonight sounds almost exactly as he did in the aftermath of the GOP losses in 2018: he's congratulating Democrats, blaming individual Republican candidates and proposing working with Washington Democrats on issues where they agree,” the CNN anchor wrote on X.
As Collins pointed out, Trump, in a Fox News interview early Wednesday, accepted the results and said the Democrats “did a good job.” He then shifted blame on Republicans, complaining that some of his picks “fought” him while others “just didn’t inspire the people to get out and vote.”
“And I wasn’t on the ballot. If I was on the ballot, they would have gotten out,” Trump said.
He also claimed he had already spoken with two senators and three congressmen and plans to work with the Democrats on immigration and other issues.
The parallels are hard to miss because in 2018, following the Democrats filling the House by 40 seats, Trump mocked Republicans who lost their seats, accepting none of the blame.
“Mia Love gave me no love. And she lost,” he said of the Utah congresswoman at the time. He also praised Nancy Pelosi and talked up bipartisan deals on infrastructure and drug prices.
However, fighting ensued with the Democratic House majority over the border wall, leading to a historic government shutdown that lasted 35 days, and the following year, House Democrats launched the impeachment proceedings that led to his first impeachment.
The president has already teased a fight with the Democrat led Congress. He reminded Fox News viewers that “I have the power of veto,” calling it “impervious.” On Truth Social, he also teased the power play, posting a red vat that has ‘Veto’ written on it. He also insisted that Republicans would have won “IN A LANDSLIDE” had he been on the ballot.
He also spent election night lashing out at Fox News over its coverage and branding Greg Abbott a “RINO” after the three-term Texas governor lost after distancing himself from Trump.
Democrats already promised to hold Trump accountable and have threatened congressional investigations into corruption and other issues.
