Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) office released another photo and statement as part of a proof-of-life demand in its ongoing effort to dispute conspiracy theories that the one-time Republican leader is dead.
McConnell's office released a photo two weeks ago of the former GOP Senate leader sitting in a hospital room chair next to his wife, former Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, pointing to the sports section of The Washington Post. It has only sparked more conspiracy theories, even prompting late-night host John Oliver to ask whether he was really alive on his Sunday night show.
In June, a 911 call was confirmed to be for McConnell, saying that he was in “cardiac arrest” and that CPR was being administered until EMS arrived. It also sparked a series of bizarre incidents that left folks scratching their heads.
In the wake of the incident, Chao, flew to China mere days after McConnell was hospitalized. Upon her return, she was photographed by individuals outside the hospital wearing a long trench coat and a mask in 95-degree heat.
In the new letter, McConnell appears to be sitting in another hospital chair with pillows behind him and Chao next to him.
According to Punchbowl's Andrew Desiderio cited the McConnell statement saying he's “keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors' orders.”
The Office of the Attending Physician told Desiderio that McConnell has been “discharge[d] from hospital care” but is “not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office.” The statement explained that his physical therapy is “designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls."
According to McConnell's office, he suffered a fall in early June but didn't break anything or have a concussion. He has been in the hospital for over a month, however.
McConnell said he won't make it to the "Fancy Farm" event in Kentucky on Saturday. He said "there's no place I'd rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the good people of western Kentucky feasting on pork and mutton."
This year's picnic marks the 146th edition and is the largest in the state, reported The Courier-Journal.
McConnell said his first time attending was 42 years ago when there weren't many Republicans around western Kentucky. He bragged that now it's a "sea of red. So, I hate that I'll miss the fun this year, but I'm sending my best wishes to the St. Jerome community for a successful picnic. As always, I appreciate all of your continued well wishes, and I'm looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon."
