'Such a caricature': Joe Scarborough rips Josh Hawley for 'childish trolling' of conservative writer

In a late May New York Times column, conservative opinion writer David French argued that MAGA Republicans have a distorted view of masculinity. Liberals and progressives have often made similar arguments, but in this case, the argument was coming from the right.
Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri, a MAGA Republican, took offense at the column and trolled French on Twitter — posting, "David French takes a break from promoting drag queens to talk about masculinity." And French, in response, posted, "I write a piece about how the allegedly 'manly' right is committed to petty trolling, and Hawley responds to the piece with petty trolling."
Never Trump conservative Joe Scarborough slammed Hawley's trolling during the May 30 broadcast of MSNBC's "Morning Joe." Scarborough, a scathing critic of Hawley and others in the MAGA movement, argued that Hawley's over-the-top antics only illustrate the points French made in his column.
Scarborough told co-host Mika Brzezinski and panelist Willie Geist, "It's about gesturing with people like Sen. Hawley. It's all about shocking. You just saw it right there…. It's heartbreaking that (Hawley) is feeding lies to young men who actually do need examples of strength, do need examples in Washington."
The MSNBC host added that French's "childish trolling and gesturing to the far, far right" hardly makes him a positive role model for young men.
"It's such a caricature," Scarborough said of Hawley. "It's such a joke…. Real men don't sit around whining about a war on manhood. They get up, they go to work. They work hard and try to do their job.
