MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Rakes Clinton-Hating Trey Gowdy Over the Coals for Saying the Mueller Probe Should Wrap Up

Media

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) on Thursday joined the chorus of Republicans who have cynically and without justification demanded that special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into President Donald Trump's campaign end soon. He made the comments during the congressional testimony of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees the probe.

But as MSNBC's Rache Maddow pointed out, this was a particularly hypocritical claim for Gowdy, of all people, to be making, given his excessive targeting of Hillary Clinton in recent years.

"If you have evidence of wrongdoing by any member of the Trump campaign present it to the damn grand jury," Gowdy said to Rosenstein. "If you have evidence that this president acted inappropriately present it to the American people. There's an old saying that justice delayed is justice denied. I think right now all of us are being denied. Whatever you got, finish it the hell up, because this country is being torn apart."

Maddow's denunciation was swift and decisive.

"This from the man who kept the Select Committee on Benghazi going for two and a half years! Kept it going until right after the 2016 presidential election, whereupon he lost interest and quietly wrapped it up," she said. "Two and a half years ... Zero indictments, zero guilty pleas, zero prison sentences, zero jail time."

She continued: "But he is now demanding the one-year-old Robert Mueller investigation, which has resulted in lots of indictments! And lots of guilty pleas! And even some jail time. He's insisting that one has gone on way too long and that must be — what was it he said — it must be 'finished the hell up.'"
