Republicans have spent decades arguing that federal spending was out of control. On Wednesday, however, MS NOW host Joe Scarborough shared a report showing that the GOP continues to blow through taxpayer dollars, putting more and more on the nation's credit card.
Scarborough shared a Reuters report showing the U.S. hit a new monthly record for spending at $145 billion.
"The Republican Congress and President Clinton ran a budget surplus for four straight years," the host wrote on X, recalling his years in Congress.
"In Dec ‘25, Republicans broke the record for running a $145 billion deficit in ONE MONTH. The U.S. didn’t run a YEARLY deficit that high for its first 200 years," he noted.
For the first time ever, the national debt passed the $36 trillion threshold in November.
A report from Investopedia found that since 1913, Republican presidents added more to the deficit than Democratic presidents.
Trump's White House said it cut the budget deficit by $41 billion by the end of fiscal year 2025.
When campaigning for office in 2024, top Trump donor and campaigner Elon Musk said he would cut the federal budget by $2 trillion by 2026. As of April 2025, he was more than $1.8 trillion off from his goal, The CATO Institute calculated.
