President Trump has been described as a "psychotic duck with nuclear weapons" by longtime critic George Conway, who turned a TV discussion on the future of the president into a scathing attack on his mental state.

The conservative lawyer gave the rather extraordinary description of the president on X following a discussion about whether Trump could end up as a lame duck president after next week's midterms.

It all started with a social media post by former U.S. ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul about an appearance on MS NOW's Morning Joe with Financial Times columnist Edward Luce.

"Was on @Morning_Joe today with @EdwardGLuce when he said that Trump will not become a lame duck, but an 'angry duck.' That image has stuck with me," McFaul wrote.

Conway took up the description but felt that Luce hadn't gone far enough in his assessment of the president.

"I'm usually in complete agreement with my friend @EdwardGLuce but feel obliged to offer the emendation that what we will have (already, frankly) in Trump is an angry, psychopathic, and psychotic duck with nuclear weapons," Conway wrote.

The term "lame duck" generally applies to a president who is left nearly powerless when the opposition party controls Congress and can block or slow down any legislative work.

A Democratic takeover of either chamber of Congress is looking likely a week from now if the polling is to be believed. This will leave Trump facing congressional investigations and a potential third impeachment.

Conway's takedown of Trump is by no means his first attempt to paint the president as mentally unfit for office.

In 2024, the former Republican launched the Anti-Psychopath PAC with the aim of making Trump's mental fitness an issue in the election.

During an appearance on MS Now in September, Conway said Trump was having "psychotic breaks" in response to a Washington Post report about the president panicking about a potential GOP wipeout in the midterms.

In the interview, Conway expressed fear of Trump possessing the nuclear code. “He's never been in touch with reality to the extent that one would expect; one would want someone with, you know, thousands of nuclear weapons at their disposal to be. But now he's completely losing it.”

Conway was previously married to former Trump White House adviser Kellyanne Conway and has spent many years in the public eye at odds with the president and challenging his behavior.

Edward Luce's "angry duck" warning is more about what could come after the midterms and whether Trump and his GOP allies will accept the results if the Republicans lose.
