'Art of stupidity': Dem Congressman says Trump waging 'assault on America’s seniors'

Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) called the Trump administration's recent actions regarding its tariff policy the "art of stupidity," saying that it is "an assault on America's seniors."

During an appearance on MSNBC Thursday, Josh Gottheimer was asked to comment on Trump administration officials calling President Donald Trump's decision to reverse his tariffs policy "the art of the deal."

"I think it's the art of stupidity," he said.

"If the president's strategy is to increase inflation, as the Fed chair has said, it will cause increased prices, as we're already seeing around the country on food, on clothing, on cars," the New Jersey Democrat added.

"Then I guess that's their strategy to increase prices on things," he said. "It's to go after as an assault on America's seniors, I guess that's part of their strategy going after Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security."

Earlier this week, Gottheimer announced he was co-sponsoring a bipartisan bill that would restore Congress's authority to oversee foreign trade.

"President Trump is abusing the trade powers Congress afforded the White House in 1974," said a press release announcing the legislation.

In response to a question about the bill, Gottheimer said, "It's why we've made very clear in a bipartisan way with our legislation [that] the president is going to have to go back to coming here to Congress and actually making the case for each one of these tariffs he wants to impose."

The lawmaker said Trump was going after the United States' trading partners, referring to the situation as "utter chaos."

"It appears part of their strategy to raise prices on families — which is what Trump is doing, raising prices on families, hurting the retirement savings and just utter chaos," Gottheimer said.
