On Wednesday, new reporting revealed that FBI agents are “worried” they could end up being called on to push President Donald Trump’s election meddling agenda. According to MS NOW, recent events have led some current agents to express concern that they may be ordered to seize voting machines or take other actions that disrupt elections. “I’m worried about that situation for sure,” a current FBI official said. “We have all the evidence we need to expect at least one U.S. attorney and one FBI agent to be willing to sign on to such actions, such as Georgia and Arizona.”
Current and former FBI officials told MS NOW that they believe the Trump administration has already taken action that erodes voter trust in election integrity, and some agents have expressed deep concern that they could be ordered to take legally questionable steps to investigate false claims of election fraud. Because of this, advocates for free and fair elections are getting ahead of the crisis, preparing to lend FBI agents support if they worry they have been assigned a task that is illegal or unethical, according to two former law enforcement officials who have knowledge of the plans.
Officials who spoke to MS NOW became alarmed after incidents like the seizure of ballots in Fulton County, Georgia, and worry that the Justice Department could seek to obtain warrants using baseless claims of voting irregularities — warrants that could, potentially, allow armed agents to seize ballots or machines. According to experts, these seizures could prevent both the casting and counting of ballots, and could disrupt the chain of custody normally required to prevent tampering. In a rare moment of alignment, the conservative-leaning ranks of FBI agents have found themselves on the same side as progressive-leaning nonprofits and legal advocates. Agents share their fear that the administration will interfere with the counting process because of the Trump administration’s wave of legal attacks on state elections and the president’s relentless election denial claims. The administration already has a track record of using the FBI to push such conspiracies, having twice used the bureau to seize state voting records and equipment.
In July, two Atlanta-based FBI intelligence analysts were fired after refusing to work on the administration’s investigation into the 2020 election that spurred the Fulton County ballot grab. According to one of the agents, Rob D’Amico, a former supervisor, “I and others are worried that the FBI will be the administration’s arm into seizing voting machines or issuing warrants on questionable probable cause.” Another former official agreed, saying, “I’m concerned about any actions that introduce uncertainty in the chain of custody of machines or ballots such that it becomes impossible to verify the true count, or introduces such doubt that no one believes the result.”
