'Titanic hit the iceberg': Republicans brutally mocked for failing to pass their own bill

President Donald Trump's so-called "Big, Beautiful Bill" failed to clear its first major hurdle on Friday after a key vote in the House Budget Committee.
NBC News reported that the bill failed to pass with five Republicans joining all 16 Democrats on the committee to vote no. The final tally was 21-16 against passage. The five Republican "no" votes disapproved of the bill over their opinion that it didn't go far enough to cut Medicaid (which provides health insurance to low-income and disabled Americans).
On Bluesky, Atlanta Journal-Constitution political reporter Greg Bluestein called the vote "an embarrassing setback for Republican leaders." Other journalists, elected officials and commentators also celebrated the bill's defeat in the Budget Committee.

"We just voted down the immoral, irresponsible, GOP budget betrayal in committee. Republicans couldn't agree on just how many vital services to rip away from Americans," Rep. Paul Tonko (D-N.Y.) posted on Bluesky. "While this is a win, the fight continues to pass a budget that truly meets the needs of our communities."
"The @HouseGOP just failed to pass their Big Ugly Bill out of the Budget Committee," House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) wrote on her X account. "They're fighting over how many Americans to rip health care and food away from. Keep up the pressure."
Other reactions also celebrated the bill's defeat while piling on the House Republican majority for its failure. Business executive Tero Kuttinen observed that "gutting Medicaid really may be the third rail." Former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance tweeted "fever dream breaking?" And MSNBC host Lawrence O'Donnell reacted to the news by tweeting: "Breaking: Titanic hit the iceberg."
"Wowie. Republicans can’t govern, 2025 edition," tweeted attorney and former Republican Ron Filipkowski of the liberal MeidasTouch group. "What an absolute disaster for Johnson and Trump."
