On Friday, it was revealed that a powerful national union is trying to take down a Nevada GOP candidate who was backed by President Donald Trump and accused of “stolen valor” by veterans. Trump won the district by 14 points in 2024, and according to the Nevada Independent, the election serves as a “canary in the coal mine” for the GOP’s fate in the upcoming midterms.
For the first time ever, the AFL-CIO – the country’s largest trade union – is targeting Nevada’s ruby red 2nd Congressional District seat. The district has been firmly Republican for the entirety of its existence, and the union’s move to flip it highlights the historic nature of the GOP’s midterm vulnerability. This vulnerability is being felt nationwide because of Trump’s wild unpopularity, but in Nevada’s 2nd, it’s also due to accusations of “stolen valor” on the part of Republicans’ MAGA nominee.
These claims stem from candidate David Flippo’s "exaggerated" claim of earning a Bronze Star with valor. According to the Nevada Independent, “Flippo repeated the incorrect credentials in the form of a congressional announcement video in 2023, when he ran for Congress in Nevada's 4th Congressional District, two fundraising solicitations in 2026 and in at least 12 press releases over the course of four months.” Flippo’s allies have specifically mentioned the “with valor” distinction, while a conservative commentator who opposes the candidate noted that he’s often seen wearing a Bronze Star with two “V” symbols denoting “valor.”
According to the Independent, Flippo “blamed campaign video editors and copywriters after The Washington Post reported on his overstated credentials — Flippo was awarded a standard Bronze Star in 2004 (usually awarded for meritorious service or achievement in a combat zone without direct personal exposure to combat risks), whereas a Bronze Star with valor is awarded for heroism under enemy fire. The distinction may seem relatively innocuous to those not connected to the military. Veterans say it's anything but. In 1996, when an investigation indicated that Adm. Jeremy ‘Mike’ Boorda, then chief of naval operations, had improperly worn two bronze pins denoting valor in combat, Boorda shot himself and left behind suicide notes expressing concern that the investigation would tarnish the Navy's reputation.”
Now, the AFL-CIO is producing a series of ads in which local veterans voice anger about the matter. "He's betraying the military, the rank and ribbon system, and so what else is he willing to betray?" Mickey Grizzle, a 74-year-old retired union letter carrier and Marine veteran, told The Nevada Independent. "In other words, if that's not important to see to it that's correct, what else would he betray?" According to veteran Marc Ellis, “This is a big deal. Getting a Bronze Star means you are just so much above and beyond that you are the elite amongst the elite. But then to lie and say it was with valor … it disrespects everybody that actually did put their life on the line."
According to Nevada Independent reporter Jon Ralston, the explanations offered by Flippo’s campaign have been “lame,” and “this district is the GOP canary in the coal mine” for the November elections. Should his Democratic challenger win or even deliver a narrow loss in the long-red, previously Trump-strong district, it will sound major alarms for already concerned Republicans.
