President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he is pursuing a third prosecution against former FBI Director James Comey, this time accusing the bureaucrat who arguably helped him win the 2016 presidential election, and whose subsequent firing led to another FBI investigation into the president. In response to this, Trump's opponents claimed that the president was abusing his power to pursue a political grievance — while his supporters gloated.
"James Comey has broken his silence on his third indictment in a video on his Substack: “Well they’re back — again," posted Benny Johnson, a conservative commentator. "He’s still trying to convince everyone he’s innocent… we’ve all seen the evidence. You’re getting exactly what you deserve, Jim.""
Steve Guest, who used to work for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), wrote on X. "WOW. Hillary Clinton’s birthday wish came true already!"
He added, "I’m old enough to remember Hillary & her 2016 campaign going nuclear on James Comey for his October 28, 2016 letter: 'She called it “unprecedented and deeply troubling.” Campaign chair John Podesta accused him of a letter “long on innuendo and short on facts” that let “partisans distort and exaggerate to inflict maximum political damage.”"
MAGA influencer Jim Hanson simply mused, "Comey gave his buddy classified documents to leak to the media. That better get him a prison sentence."
Meanwhile Right Line News executive Eric Daughtery used an acronym for an expletive then added, "HE’S COOKED!" and "or a decade, Comey lectured the country from his high horse while orchestrating backchannel intelligence LEAKS to SMEAR Donald Trump during the campaign and after!"
He concluded, "Now he is facing a second federal prosecution. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW Here’s a past moment of Comey whining. I’m sure he’ll run to legacy media soon"
By contrast, anti-Trumpers are horrified.
Former Rep. Adam Kirzinger (R-IL) simply wrote "Absolute clowns."
Attorney and professor Kathleen Clark posted on Bluesky, "5 DOJ lawyers sign the information charging Comey — and all 5 are political appointees. Jeanine Pirro’s name is not among them."Voter rights advocacy nonprofit Democracy Docket argued on X that "the move marks an escalation in Trump's ongoing retaliation campaign to prosecute his political foes."
Meanwhile on Bluesky veteran Dennis Buchholz said that "I believe Trump did that with Nuclear Sub capabilities and aircraft deployment."
Comey, who observed being charged with crimes by the president three times would "almost be funny" if it wasn't such a grave threat to democracy, has now been charged with "lawfully possessing, accessing, controlling, and being entrusted any document, writing, code book, signal book, sketch, photograph, photographic negative, blueprint, plan, map, model, instrument, appliance and note relating to the national defense, and with information relating to the national defense—and having reason to believe such information could be used to injure the United States and to the advantage of any foreign nation—knowingly and willfully communicated, delivered, transmitted and caused that information to be communicated, delivered, and transmitted to a person not entitled to receive it."
