Watch: House chamber descends into chaos as Matt Gaetz clashes with Kevin McCarthy allies

After failing to secure the House Speaker position in no less than 11 roll-call votes, Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California hoped that Friday, January 6 would finally be the day that he would close the deal and win over the 19 or 20 Never Kevin Republicans who had been voting against him. But that day, the House floor erupted into chaos when far-right Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida — one of the most vocal Never Kevin Republicans — clashed with McCarthy’s supporters, including Rep. Mike Bost of Illinois.
Gaetz drew applause from some of McCarthy’s opponents when he argued, “You only earn the position of speaker if you can get the votes. Mr. McCarthy doesn't have the votes today. He will not have the votes tomorrow. And he will not have the votes next week, next month, next year.”
Gaetz’s speech, however, was interrupted by shouting from McCarthy supporters. But he continued to make his case against McCarthy and nominated Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio for House speaker. Jordan, however, is supporting McCarthy as House speaker.

“Mr. Jordan indeed is reflective of pure selfless intent,” Gaetz argued. “I don't know that the same can be said for the Republican alternative.”
As Gaetz continued to make his arguments in favor of nominating Jordan over McCarthy, many House members expressed their disdain by getting up and walking away.
