Gaetz withdrew nomination after being asked to comment on new allegation of sex with minor

The apparent reason former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) withdrew his nomination as President-elect Donald Trump's next attorney general has been revealed.
CNN's Paula Reid and Sarah Ferris reported Thursday that the woman who testified that she had sex with Gaetz when she was 17 years old has now alluded to a separate sexual encounter. According to CNN, Gaetz had two sexual encounters with the 17 year-old at a party in 2017, after he had already been sworn in as the congressman for Florida's 1st Congressional District. The second encounter happened simultaneously with an adult woman.
"After being asked for comment for this story, Gaetz announced he was backing out as President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general nominee," Reid and Ferris wrote.

The CNN report noted that while the deposition from the then-17 year-old is still under seal, her allegations are public record in a separate civil suit in Florida court. According to those court records, Gaetz had sex with the 17 year-old high school student on an air hockey table at a party while the homeowner watched.
Gaetz's nomination to head the Department of Justice lasted just eight days before the Florida Republican withdrew his name from consideration. Trump announced on his Truth Social platform on November 13 that he was nominating Gaetz, specifically praising him for his attacks on President Joe Biden's Department of Justice while he sat on the House Judiciary Committee.
Shortly after being nominated, Gaetz announced his resignation from the House of Representatives. While this was supposedly done in order to make it easier for Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis to quickly schedule a special election to fill his seat, Politico reported that it may have also been a strategic move in order to prevent the House Committee on Ethics from publishing a potentially damning report.
