Incumbent Sen. Darline Graham — the Republican Senate candidate in South Carolina whose visible political inexperience was literally center-stage during a primary debate in which she admitted to knowing nothing about America-Taiwan relations — is now a potentially weak nominee in a traditionally GOP state. Yet while Graham may lose in an upset to Democrat Dr. Annie Andrews, a conservative commentator said she is an ideal representative of President Donald Trump’s Republican Party.
"I saw a hot take somewhere last week speculating that Graham’s cringy Taiwan debate gaffe was actually a contrived four-dimensional-chess move to show Republican primary voters how relatable, authentic, and outsider-y she is," wrote The Dispatch's Nick Catoggio on Wednesday. "I’m skeptical of that, but after watching Sean Hannity defend her by noting that most Americans can’t find Taiwan on a map either, I wouldn’t discount it completely. (One is reminded of the famous Roman Hruska quote about mediocrity.) The joy of being part of the GOP in 2026 is not needing to know anything about anything, as all policy decisions have been entrusted to the wisdom of the president."
He added, “‘I love the poorly educated!’ Trump famously declared on the campaign trail in 2016. No wonder.”
He concluded, “Treating ignorance as not just a virtue but a qualification for elective office is the predictable endgame of populism. It feels appropriate that the unlikely Graham dynasty in South Carolina has ended up there, as the family’s political trajectory perfectly mirrors the political trajectory of the broader conservative movement over the last 10 years. From harsh Trump skepticism circa 2016 to first grudging and then enthusiastic accommodation of Trumpism during the president’s first term to ‘I dunno, whatever Mr. Trump says’ now: Whatever else you might think of them, Lindsey and Darline do fairly represent their Republican constituents.”
Graham’s primary qualification has indeed been her absolute loyalty to Trump’s agenda. Earlier in August she refused to denounce the president’s ongoing lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him.
“‘MS NOW’s Mychael Schnell asked the appointed senator about this during a Monday press conference,’ reported MS NOW's Steve Benen on Monday. ‘She apparently didn’t want to talk about it.’”
Benen continued that Schnell asked “Senator, you just mentioned that you agree with your brother on everything except for one matter, that being illegal immigration, you’d go farther than him on that. That being said, I’m curious, do you agree with him about the 2020 election, that Joe Biden was certified the winner of that election, was lawfully elected, and that you would’ve voted to certify the election, as your brother did?”
According to Benen, Graham told Schnell that “I think our election system is broken,” then said she will support Trump’s voter suppression legislation. After that, she refused to answer further questions.
