'Can’t wait until this guy dies': Report reveals GOP insiders’ real sentiments toward Trump

An Atlantic journalist is speaking out with the truth about Republican lawmakers' feelings toward former President Donald Trump although they refuse to verbalize their concerns.
During a recent appearance on CNN, The Atlantic's McKay Coppins insisted most Republicans are done with the former president but still fear the repercussions of speaking out against him.
“They all wanted him gone, but nobody wanted to confront him directly,” Coppins said Monday on CNN. “There is just this fear that if they go after him or if they try to rally around somebody else they’ll spark a backlash from his base.”
At one point during the Coppins discussion, he also echoed claims from a recent report he wrote for The Atlantic. In that piece, he even insisted some Republican insiders are hoping something happens so Trump cannot pursue his 2024 presidential aspirations.
Shedding light on his discussion with former Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Mich.), Coppins claims the former lawmaker told him, “You have a lot of folks who are just wishing for [Trump’s] mortal demise. I want to be clear: I’m not in that camp. But I’ve heard from a lot of people who will go onstage and put on the red hat, and then give me a call the next day and say, ‘I can’t wait until this guy dies.’”
According to Coppins, Meijer's remarks were not the first he's heard along these lines.
“I was taken aback by how often I heard this,” he said. “I thought it was kind of a morbid, dark joke at first. But I heard it so often that it started to become clear that this was actually what a lot of Republicans believe and it just speaks to the desperation in the party.”
