Just 'eat right': Herschel Walker has a suggestion for voters concerned about high insulin costs

Herschel Walker, a Republican Senate nominee in the state of Georgia, insists individuals concerned about rising insulin costs should just "eat right."

The remarks came during Walker's debate with Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) on Friday, October 14 when both candidates expressed their views on the economic challenges Americans are facing as costs continue to rise across the country.

Warnock, according to HuffPost, used the moment as an opportunity to highlight his work passing the Inflation Reduction Act which was designed to lower the cost of prescription drugs while placing a $35 monthly cap on insulin costs." The Democratic senator also emphasized how Walker opposed the act.

Walker responded by arguing that the Inflation Reduction Act had not aided in lowering the cost of insulin. Sharing his take on the concerns about rising insulin costs, Walker also offered voters a suggestion. “I believe in reducing insulin but at the same time, you gotta eat right. I know many people that’s on insulin," Walker said.

"Unless you’re eating right, insulin is doing you no good. So you have to get food prices down and you gotta get gas down so you can go get insulin,” he added.

While dietary improvement could help to reduce an individual's risk of Type 2 diabetes, medical experts argue that dietary changes, alone, would not be helpful for individuals with Type 1 diabetes. Social media users also took to Twitter with similar arguments and critical responses to Walker's words.

"My Type 1 diabetic brother who died bc he couldn’t afford his insulin would disagree," one Twitter user tweeted. Another added, "My sister is a Type I diabetic who eats like a bird. She still needs insulin injections every day."

The Georgia Senate race is a critical component for the 2022 midterm elections as the race will influence which party has control of the Senate. Warnock, a first-time Senate lawmaker, is seeking re-election.
