When FBI agents executed a search warrant at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago compound on Monday, August 8, they were searching for classified government documents that never should have left Washington D.C. — including, according to the Washington Post, documents pertaining to nuclear weapons. One of the “top-secret” documents seized at Mar-a-Lago, journalists Devlin Barrett and Carol D. Leonnig reported in the Post on September 6, described a “foreign government’s military defenses” and “nuclear capabilities.”

Late-night television host Stephen Colbert weighed in on this Trump-related scandal during the Tuesday, September 7 broadcast of “The Late Show,” slamming the former president for endangering the United States from a national security standpoint.

“The former president had stolen nuclear secrets at his country club, because we just learned that among the classified documents seized by the FBI at Mar-a-Lago was material on a foreign nation’s nuclear capabilities,” a frustrated Colbert angrily told viewers. “So, this time, the ex-president wasn’t just betraying our country — he brought in another country for a ménage à treason.”

With the audience laughing and applauding, Colbert added, “How do you explain this to our allies? Don’t worry, prime minister, your country’s nuclear secrets are perfectly safe stored at the Mar-a-Lago waffle bar between the syrup and the Nutella bucket…. These type of intelligence documents are so top-secret, the president himself has to declassify them so other people can see it. Even our senior national security officials are not allowed to see them without specific permission. And the fact that he had them is completely indefensible.”
