Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has confirmed that he will not be in attendance at President Joe Biden's State of the Union address on Tuesday, March 1. However, his reason for not attending has led to criticism on social media.

Speaking to HuffPost's Igor Bobic, the Republican lawmaker claimed he cannot attend because he does not have enough time to take a COVID-19 test. Bobic took to Twitter with a small highlight from his brief chat with Rubio.

"Rubio says he won’t attend Biden’s State of the Union address tomorrow because of the COVID testing requirement," Bobic tweeted. Quoting the Republican senator, he added, “I don’t have time to go take a COVID test today. I only take a test if I’m sick."

It didn't take long for social media users to fire back and call the lawmaker out for his seemingly frivolous excuse. "The rules don’t apply to Lil Marco [Marco Rubio] is so important," one user tweeted. "Better than everyone else. So so busy. #emptysuit. Self Entitled jerk."

Another user tweeted, "Cuz, you know, demonstrations of unity aren’t for Republicans. Nor is making sure you’re not going to infect others with a dangerous virus."
