A former strategist, known for his work in the Bush-Cheney 2004 presidential campaign, is urging Americans to take the steps necessary to protect the country's Republic.

According to Business Insider, Matthew Dowd, who served as the chief strategist for former President George W. Bush's re-election campaign, believes it is important for everyone to get behind the Democratic Party if they are truly interested in upholding democracy.

On Thursday, June, Dowd took to Twitter with a few words of advice for his followers. "All the tribes of our nation who care about democracy need to put aside any policy and cultural differences and go all-in with the Democratic Party," he tweeted. "It is the only vehicle we can trust to guard our Republic."

He also said that the Republican Party "has bought into the mendacity from the mad king of Mara Lago [sic]," which appeared to be a direct reference to former President Donald Trump. Dowd also described the political party as "a party of autocracy."

He continued, "The Democratic Party is the only path today to protect our nation."

Before joining the Bush re-election campaign, Dowd served as a senior advisor for the Republican National Committee (RNC). The latest comes as Republican lawmakers continue their efforts to restrict voting rights and alter election practices in states across the country.

Since 2000, Republicans have proposed more than 200 pieces of legislation as Democrats and voting rights advocates continue their efforts to fight back in the name of democracy.
