Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows was not pleased with Dr. Anthony Fauci's remarks blaming the Trump administration for the staggering COVID death toll but social media users are standing by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) director.

During a recent interview on NBC News' "The Today Show," host Savannah Guthrie asked Fauci where he believes the Trump administration went wrong with its handling of the coronavirus pandemic. The top infectious disease expert said, "One of the things I keep harkening back to, that you can't run away from, is that we had such divisiveness in our country that even simple common-sense public health measures took on a political connotation."

He later added, "It wasn't a pure public health approach—it was really, very much influenced by the divisiveness we had in this country. And mixed messages were coming from Washington, that's for sure."

Meadows was not pleased with those remarks and he wasted no time firing back, reports Newsweek. On Thursday, March 11, Meadows appeared on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle" where he slammed Fauci for his assessment of the COVID death toll. "

Dr. Fauci is the same one that said every recommendation he made to President Trump, President Trump followed," Meadows said. "Now we have a new administration, we have a new Dr. Fauci that seems to forget some of the conversations that he and I had."

He added, "The only thing consistent about Dr. Fauci is his inconsistency."

Shortly after Meadows made the remarks, he was met with opposition from social media users who strongly disagreed with him. One Twitter user said, "So now Mark Meadows is blaming Fauci for being inconsistent. Mark Meadows knows nothing about science and is now desperately worried that the new attorney general is going to find a connection between him, the former guy, and try to overturn Georgia elections."

Another Twitter user wrote, "America never forget that Sean Hannity and Mark Meadows knew the truth about the coronavirus yet they went on Fox News day after day lying to the American public resulting in the death of over a half a million Americans Sean Hannity and Mark Meadows purposely killed Americans."

Despite Meadows' attempts to defend the Trump administration, the statistics speak volumes. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the United States has reported nearly 30 million coronavirus cases and over 543,000 deaths.
