Amy Coney Barrett can't name the 5 freedoms in the First Amendment: ‘What am I missing?’

Wednesday marked the third day in the Senate confirmation hearings for Judge Amy Coney Barrett, President Donald Trump's far-right nominee to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the U.S. Supreme Court. One of the Republicans who questioned Barrett was Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse, who asked Barrett to discuss the specifics of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution — and she was unable to fully answer his question.

The Nebraska Republican, one of the few GOP senators who hasn't been afraid to criticize Trump at times, asked Barrett, "What the five freedoms of the First Amendment?"—to which Barrett responded, "Speech, religion, press, assembly." But she couldn't remember a fifth one, telling Sasse, "I don't know. What am I missing?"

Sasse helped Barrett out and named "redress or protest." And Sasse asked Barrett, "Why is there one amendment that has these five freedoms clustered? Why do they hang together?" Barrett's response, "Um, I don't know what you're getting at," and he asked her to reflect on the "glories of the First Amendment."
