Russian Spokesman: "You're Free to Make Sex With This Table"
Jason Jones of the Daily Show met up with some Russians about their country's handle of gay rights in the context of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.Â
"There is real personal freedom in Russia. Nobody cares who you have sex with," said Sergey Markov, spokesperson for Vladimir Putin.Â
He went on to urge Jason Jones that, if the American correspondent chose to have sex with the table in front of him, it would be analogous to same sex relations between two people.
"Have sex between man and woman, normal. Have sex between man and man, not normal. Everybody knows this. Including gays."Â
Jones then went into the streets to find out the the views of everyday Russians on homosexuality, mostly finding people who concurred with Markov.Â
One gay rights advocate, in the face of such entrenched homophobia, vowed to continue the fight: "If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do."Â
