Did Lupe Fiasco Get Kicked Off Stage After Anti-Obama Remarks?

News & Politics

It looks like Sunday night's StartUp RockOn concert, a private inauguration weekend event, may not have gone exactly as planned. Two journalists who were at the concert tweeted that headliner Lupe Fiasco made anti-Obama remarks and was then asked to leave the stage early.

Here are screegrabs of those tweets, from Foreign Policy's Josh Rogin and CNN's Matt Mornic, via Mediaite:

The performer reportedly rapped, "Limbaugh is a racist, Glenn Beck is a racist....Gaza Strip was getting bombed, Obama didn’t say shit. That’s why I ain’t vote for him, next one either."

One of the event organizers, HyperVocal, disputes the report that Lupe Fiasco was "kicked off stage." The company's statement, via Mediaite:

Lupe Fiasco performed at this private event, and as you may have read, he left the stage earlier than we had planned. But Lupe Fiasco was not “kicked off stage” for an “anti-Obama rant.” We are staunch supporters of free speech, and free political speech. This was not about his opinions. Instead, after a bizarrely repetitive, jarring performance that left the crowd vocally dissatisfied, organizers decided to move on to the next act.

So maybe his performance just sucked? Or did it suck while he was dissing the president?
