A new media campaign is aiming to call attention to President Donald Trump's treatment of veterans and their families, and is centering the voices of military families who have been directly impacted by his policies.

In a Wednesday segment on MSNBC, Sarah Longwell — who is publisher of anti-Trump conservative news outlet The Bulwark — discussed her latest effort to give veterans a platform to speak out about Trump, dubbed "Home of the Brave." Wallace opined that the second Trump administration has exhibited a "wanton disregard" for military veterans and their service, and described Longwell's project as "encouraging all of these people impacted to speak out about the damage Donald Trump has done to them."

Longwell told Wallace she felt the need to launch the project after witnessing the capitulation of various American institutions like elite universities, law firms and media companies, and wanted to give veterans an opportunity to demonstrate that they didn't need to "cower in the face of his threats." She specifically mentioned that people who oppose Trump often confess that they're "scared" and "panicked" and are looking for a meaningful way to use their voice.

"The only choice now is for regular people to stand up and say something," Longwell said. "... And so telling the stories of the negative personal consequences that people are experiencing as a result of Trump's policies is the way to help people understand why Donald Trump has failed them, has betrayed them, has lied to them, and hopefully by regular Americans standing up and telling their stories, it will give them necessary courage."

"Donald Trump has been corroding and corrupting our society now for almost a decade," she added. "[T]he only antidote is regular people saying, we are not going to do this. We're not going to let all of you buckle down."

Wallace played one video testimony from a veteran named Laura Laplant, who served in the U.S. Navy for 10 years. She mentioned that her father-in-law, who was a three-star admiral, died in January but has still not had his funeral at Arlington National Cemetery due to the Trump administration's cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

"That is really delaying things, and it's just heartbreaking. Everyone wants to put him to rest. and to move on and remember his life and legacy, but we can't. It's very frustrating," Laplant said. "I wish the Trump administration, as much as they say they care about the vets and wants to take care of the vets, they're not doing it."
