A woman who voted for Donald Trump three times turned on the president during a Newsmax interview, accusing him of abandoning his “America First” agenda that won her support in the first place.
Boston native Karen Bolger, who was interviewed by the conservative network as it traveled across the country talking to Americans before the midterm elections, said that she has supported Trump since he first became involved in presidential politics in 2015; yet, almost 11 years on, she says she is becoming more dissatisfied with where his attention seems to be directed.
“I believed in him since 2015. I still do, but I would love to see a little more America First, because right now it feels like it’s ‘world first’ rather than country,” Bolger said.
According to Andrew Craft, a correspondent with Newsmax, Bolger is a retired nurse, mother and grandmother who earns only enough to be ineligible for federal aid but is having difficulty meeting her daily expenses.
Bolger specifically mentioned the rising bills for households in Massachusetts.
“We have very, very high utility costs in Massachusetts, very high,” she said. “And I worry about those costs. Being able to heat my home, being able to pay for the electricity. The costs have just skyrocketed.”
Her frustrations also included the impact on younger Americans, who, according to her, are finding it more and more difficult to lead financially independent lives.
Bolger stated that young people are finding it difficult to move out of their parents' homes, buy their own homes, afford health insurance and secure good jobs even after having gone to college. She was concerned that these pressures were causing the promises of government-subsidized benefits to seem more attractive to younger voters.
She added that the political climate is driving the youth towards “socialism.”
When Craft was asked whether anyone at the moment represents the "America First" movement better than the president, she picked someone in his administration, Vice President JD Vance.
Bolger said that he feels Vance is more in touch with the American people at the moment, and that he has become more outspoken in his efforts to reach ordinary voters.
“J.D. Vance…I feel that he is more in touch with the American people right now. And he’s really coming into his own, I think,” Bolger said. “And he’s, you know, being more vocal and just really reaching out to the American public. And I feel that he’s just relatable.”
While frustrated with the president, Bolger said she hasn’t completely abandoned the GOP. If Vance runs in 2028, he appears to have a voter who has become disillusioned with his boss.
