Watch: Conservative lays out the disturbing reason behind Trump’s 'deep disrespect for the military'
During a March 13 campaign event in Davenport, Iowa, 2024 GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump vowed to use the U.S. military to "get crime out of our cities" if he returns to the White House — a threat that he has been doubling down on since then.
Never Trump conservative Tom Nichols sounded the alarm about Trump's ideas for the military in an article published online by The Atlantic on December 8. Nichols' piece will also appear in The Atlantic's January/February 2024 print edition, a special issue devoted to the many dangers that a second Trump Administration would bring to the United States.
Nichols continued to sound the alarm when he discussed the piece during a CNN appearance that day.

The conservative journalist told CNN, "Trump makes a great show of venerating the military in public…. He actually has a deep disrespect for the military, as I pointed out in the piece. This is a guy who referred to America's war dead as losers and suckers."
Nichols went on to warn that Trump wants to use the U.S. military "as his personal muscle."
"Military leaders have already had to make decisions that challenge the problems that are a challenge to the Constitution," Nichols warned. "They've had to make that decision about: Do I obey the president, or do I obey the Constitution? Which is why Trump has such a grudge against the military, because he sees the professional military as people who thwarted him and slow-rolled him and didn't let him do the things he wanted to do."
Nichols continued, "And so, what he'll do is replace those officers until he finds somebody that will do the things he wants to do. And again, I think that's what he's going to do throughout the rest of the government. The same thing he'll do, for example, in the Justice Department. He'll just roll through people until he finds an attorney general that's just going to do the things he wants to do."
