Donald Trump's status as the 2024 GOP presidential frontrunner was confirmed in New Hampshire on Tuesday, January 23, when he enjoyed roughly an 11 percent victory over the only other Republican who is left in the primary: former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. Despite her losses in New Hampshire and Iowa, Haley has vowed to stay in the race and concentrate on the forthcoming GOP primary in her state.

But the primary results in New Hampshire weren't all good news for Trump, who fared well among the hardcore MAGA base but didn't receive nearly as much support from independents, moderates or non-MAGA conservatives — the sort of swing voters incumbent Democratic President Joe Biden is hoping to win over in the general election.

According to Reuters, "Some 35 percent of voters in New Hampshire's contest considered themselves moderates or liberals…. Only one in five of these voters picked Trump, with about three quarters voting for Haley, according to the exit poll results which were still being updated."

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?

In a scathing commentary the morning after New Hampshire's primary, MSNBC's Joe Scarborough stressed that Trump's strength with the MAGA base doesn't erase his weaknesses among independents.

Scarborough, a Never Trump conservative and former GOP congressman, told "Morning Joe" co-host Mika Brzezinski and MSNBC colleague Willie Geist, "I can't say this enough: Donald Trump is getting about 50 percent of the vote in Iowa, he's getting about 50 percent of the vote in New Hampshire. He's running as basically a glorified incumbent…. This guy should be getting 80 percent, 90 percent of the vote."

Scarborough went on to lay out some reasons why he believes Trump is in a "weak" position as the general election draws closer.

The Never Trumper argued, "He is so weak, even in his own party. One out of four voters in some states, one out of three voters in other states are saying they'll never vote for him. That is a weak, weak and feeble general election candidate."
