Watch: Trump blames Letitia James for Exxon leaving New York for Texas — in 1989
Former President Donald Trump is currently in the midst of closing arguments in his civil fraud case in New York, where Judge Arthur Engoron will soon decide how much Trump should be liable to pay for submitting fraudulent financial statements to state officials.
During a break in proceedings, the former president went on an unscripted rant about New York Attorney General Letitia James. In a video posted to X (formerly Twitter) by user @Acyn, Trump is seen blaming the Empire State's top law enforcement official for a corporate exodus that took place 35 years ago.
"It's a shame, she should be criminally liable for this. She did this to Exxon, and they drove Exxon out of New York," Trump said. "Exxon paid billions of dollars in taxes. They're now living in Texas. Exxon is very happy in Texas. Other companies, because of what's happening here, are gonna be moving out of New York also. This is an out-of-control attorney general."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?
According to an archived New York Times article, Exxon left New York for Texas in October of 1989, just six months after Letitia James was admitted by the New York state bar to practice law. At the time, James likely would have been in the early stages of her legal career as a public defender for the Legal Aid Society.
In a statement to the Times, Lawrence Rawl, who was chairman of Exxon at the time the company announced the relocation of its headquarters from Manhattan to a Dallas-area office park, did not mention any New York-based public defenders as the reason for his decision to move his company out of state.
"[T]he Dallas area offered the best combination of factors from the standpoint of our employees' personal and professional lives and from an overall business standpoint," Rawl said in 1989.
James' office is suing the Trump Organization for $370 million in damages, and is seeking to ban both the former president and his adult sons, Don Jr. and Eric, from holding any officer positions in any New York-based corporation for five years. She tweeted Thursday that Trump inflated the value of his Mar-a-Lago estate from its estimated $25 million valuation to more than $700 million, and that he "knowingly lied" about the size of his 10,000 square-foot apartment, stating instead it spanned 30,000 square feet.
