Speaking to reporters at the 2025 NATO Summit in The Hague, Netherlands, U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the role that intelligence played — or didn't play — in his decision to order three military strikes against Iran on Saturday, June 21.

When a reporter asked Trump if the intel was "correct" or "wrong" on Iran, he responded, "The intelligence was very inconclusive. The intelligence says we don't know. It could have been very severe. That's what the intelligence says. So I guess that's correct.… It was very severe. It was obliteration."

During a Wednesday morning, June 25 appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," veteran reporter Andrea Mitchell was very critical of Trump's comments on U.S. intelligence.

Mitchell told host Joe Scarborough, "We're on a very dangerous, slippery slope when the president of the United states is challenging intelligence." And the former MSNBC host went on to say that a lack of serious analysis is what "got us into Iraq," adding that independent foreign policy analysts "should be very concerned."

Trump's comments are also generating a lot of discussion on X, formerly Twitter.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut) tweeted, "Incoherent and embarrassing. He admits our intelligence doesn't say we destroyed anything but he still believes we destroyed everything because of course he does."

Trump critic Roxane L. Gibson posted, "Man, that's straight-up painful to watch or hear. Trump stumbling over something as obvious as 'Yeah, I'm meeting Zelensky, probably gonna talk about Ukraine.' Like, seriously? It's embarrassing, it's basic, and yet he fumbles it like it's a surprise topic. How we ended up with this level of cluelessness running the show? It's wild. It's like the country's stuck in some bad reality TV episode where the main character just can't keep from blowing it up. It's frustrating because this isn't just some dumb moment - it's our international reputation on the line."

X user Lorenzo Maldonado wrote, "Embarrassing.

Another X user, Alejandro Murcia commented, "He doesn’t know what 'intelligence' means."

X user Russel Albion tweeted, "Seriously! That's his thoughts pattern that made him bomb Iran ? Wow ! He must have felt really embarrassed after being the laughing stock of G7."

Former attorney Robert Taylor wrote, "This is how we ended up invading Iraq, 'just in case.'"
