Former President Donald Trump's decisive victories in Iowa and New Hampshire mean it is extremely likely he will be the Republican nominee in November, and two columnists are warning Americans that a second Trump term is not being taken as seriously as it should be by voters.

In a recent essay for the New Republic, authors David Rothkopf and Bernard Schwartz argued that sending the ex-president back to the White House wouldn't merely be a repeat of his first term, but would be profoundly dangerous for both the Constitution and the rule of law. Calling Trump "the most dangerous presidential candidate in US history," Rothkopf and Schwartz wrote that Trump has indicated he "wants to be a king like the one we overthrew."

"He acts like our enemies," Rothkopf and Schwartz wrote. "Not like any one of them but like all of those we have ever faced combined into a single threat even more insidious than the others."

The authors further elaborated on their likening of Trump to previous enemies of the United States, writing that he "wants to trash the Constitution, divide America, and promote white supremacy as did enemies from within 160 years ago." They also pointed to his "reaching out on national television to our Russian adversaries for aid during the 2016 campaign" and "kowtowing to Vladimir Putin and taking his word over that of our intelligence and law enforcement communities" as a way of casting Trump as a danger to the United States.

"He embraces the tactics of the fascists we fought in World War II," Rothkopf and Schwartz continued. "He is publicly an ally and part of global right-wing nationalist movements."

Conversely, the authors opined that President Joe Biden "has been one of the most successful presidents in modern US history," reminding readers that he "oversaw the creation of more than 14 million jobs during his first three years in office" and "brought down inflation," lowered costs for life-saving medications and expanded the NATO alliance, among other accomplishments. They implored Americans to "commit for the next 10 months to do more than you have ever done in an election year" to defeat Trump.

"The stakes are too high to do less than everything you can," they wrote. "The stakes are too high to allow this man to continue to play any role in American public life."
