In his widely-anticipated Thursday night speech, one that critics warned was a "trap" for journalists and that White House insiders were nervous about, Trump falsely claimed that China had altered results of the 2020 presidential election which he lost to then-Vice President Joe Biden.

"The coverup of this colossal security breach is even more disturbing in light of the additional information showing that China engaged in other election-related activities to undermine my first administration and our 2020 campaign," Trump said during the speech.

"They did not want — they just didn't want it," Trump claimed about China. "They fought like hell not to have Donald Trump win, and for good reason. As the documents we are releasing show, CIA reporting explicitly stated, and I quote: 'In mid-2018, the Chinese Communist Party's policy was to leverage all domestic and foreign elements that were opposed to the U.S. president, in an effort to reduce the U.S. president's votes and [prevent]* his reelection.' Isn't that nice?"

He added, "Also in mid-2018, China was working to influence the results of the U.S. midterm elections, and later, the results of the 2020 presidential election itself. Separately, in mid-2019, the Chinese government's strategy against the United States was focused on undermining domestic confidence in the U.S. president. They wanted to just make it sound like your president wasn't so hot, when actually your president has done a great job — and they did everything possible to do exactly that.Going on, this document says — and this is by the CIA — the strategy included efforts to use Chinese contacts with big U.S. companies to influence U.S. business leaders to turn against the president of the United States of America. Right?"

As he Trump delivered his speech, MS NOW anchor Jen Psaki fact-checked him live, pointing out that Trump was seemingly making statements either fabricated or taken out of context.

After losing the 2020 election, Donald Trump launched an unprecedented campaign claiming widespread fraud, declaring it "the most corrupt election in the history of this country" and insisting it was "stolen by the Democrats." He promoted baseless theories about voting machines deleting votes and coordinated conspiracies across multiple states, despite election officials calling 2020 "the most secure in American history."

Trump pressured state officials to "find" votes and encouraged supporters to march on Washington on January 6, 2021, tweeting that Vice President Mike Pence should "do the right thing" and overturn results. Maintaining the "Big Lie," Trump raised hundreds of millions while establishing himself as leader of a movement centered on the false stolen-election narrative.[2:01 PM]
