It's official: Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) is offended by something President Donald Trump said.
The longtime Trump superfan and MAGA acolyte almost never disagrees with the president on any issue. However, after Trump's comments at last week's FIFA World Cup draw ceremony, Tuberville took issue with the president's beliefs about what to call American football.
Last week at the ceremony, Trump said, "But when you look at what has happened to football in the United States, soccer in the United States ... we seem to never call it [football] because we have a little bit of a conflict with another thing that's called football," Trump said. "But when you think about it, shouldn't it really be called ... this is football, there's no question about it. We have to come up with another name for the NFL. It really doesn't make sense when you think about it."
Sen. Tuberville told reporters on Tuesday that he disagrees, The Huffington Post's Igor Bobic reported.
“We kick the ball too,” the former football coach said, objecting to the idea of changing the name. “We're not changing football in our country.”
"Soccer" came before American football, which evolved through the 1870s and 1880s, reported the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Rugby football came even earlier (1823) than the English Football Association, which was founded in 1863.
Still, Tuberville doesn't want to see anything change.
MS NOW's Matt Fuller joked, "Donald Trump finally said something that offended Tommy Tuberville."
