Nebraska State Senator Machaela Cavanaugh (D-6th District) blasted Republican lawmakers on Wednesday after she received complaints that they taunted survivors of sexual violence during a Planned Parenthood Lobby Day.

The organization arranged for residents to redress their grievances to elected officials who are pushing for a near-total ban on abortion. According to Cavanaugh, multiple attendees were met with disrespect and ridicule by right-wing legislators – all of whom are men.

"I've made some comments this morning about the Lobby Day yesterday for Planned Parenthood citizen advocates and, um, and how things went – how some of the people that were here yesterday, the citizens of Nebraska that were here yesterday – how they communicated to me how things went. Since I started talking about this, I have received numerous text messages, emails, and direct messages on social media. Apparently, this was a bigger problem than I was aware of," Cavanaugh began.

"Gentlemen, gentlemen, of the Nebraska Legislature. It is completely and utterly despicable to talk to victims of sexual violence the way that you did yesterday," Cavanaugh said.

"Unbelievable. Unconscionable. How dare you? How dare you? These individuals are your constituents and you did not have to go out and talk to them. You chose to go out and talk to them, and then you re-victimized them," Cavanaugh continued. "You are men in positions of power. Do better and be better. When a victim of sexual violence comes to talk to their representative and their representative tells them to 'get a better husband' – 'to get a better husband' – I am disgusted. I am disgusted. I am disgusted."
