Florida residents rage after education officials approve Dave Ramsey’s financial literacy textbook

Gov. Ron DeSantis and his allies, including the pressure group Moms for Liberty, have made a concerted effort to bring conservative material to public schools. Far-right videos from radio host Dennis Prager's PragerU program have appeared in Florida schools, and some Pasco County, Florida residents are voicing objections to the use of a textbook by right-wing radio host Dave Ramsey.

Kerry Sheridan of WUSF-FM, a National Public Radio (NPR) affiliate in Tampa, reports that a "total of 23 residents" have "filed written objections to the material, after the district signaled it planned to use the textbook, now listed on the state's approved list for grades 9-12."

Ramsey, an evangelical Christian fundamentalist, offers financial advice on his show. The radio host opposes the use of credit cards, calling them "snakes."

But Ramsey's critics have pointed out that regardless of what he thinks of credit cards, establishing a credit history is important if one hopes to buy a house in the United States.

Jessica Wright, director of education for the group Florida Freedom to Read, reviewed the Ramsey material and reported, "What we're really seeing is a trend that's happening nationwide, much in the same way that PragerU is now approved (in Florida)."

One of the reviewers who has examined the material, according to Sheridan, complained, "The Ramsey text is a Ramsey product which does not completely offer a fair and balanced approach to personal finance. For example, saying having no credit is awesome could lead students down an unfortunate path."
