The 'odd coincidence' casting further doubt on McConnell's health mystery

A newly unearthed detail is proving an "odd coincidence" in the ongoing saga surrounding Sen. Mitch McConnell's health, per The Daily Beast, with his wife once again casting doubt on the official narrative surrounding his health.

McConnell, the Kentucky Republican senator best known for his years as Senate Majority Leader, has been hospitalized since mid-June, when he was found unresponsive at his home, and has not been seen or heard from in public since then. In light of the rampant speculation about his true condition, McConnell's office has insisted that he is on the road to recovery, and released two "proof of life" photos of the senator alongside his wife, former labor and transportation secretary Elaine Chao.

Given the continued lack of video evidence showing the senator in good health, skeptics have remained unconvinced by these photos, a situation made worse by the questionable details in them that observers continue to unearth. In the latest edition of "The Daily Beast Podcast," host Joanna Coles and executive editor Hugh Dougherty discussed the latest detail that might have blown up the official narrative surrounding the photos and McConnell's status overall.

The detail stems from the second photo, released by the senator's office on July 26, in which Chao can be seen alongside her husband while wearing a particular button-up shirt featuring a pattern with peach-colored seashells. As Coles noted, Chao appears to be wearing the same outfit in this photo as she was when she was photographed outside the hospital two weeks ago while going to visit McConnell. With this "odd coincidence" in play, some have speculated that the second photo was actually taken on that day, July 11, and not on July 26, as his office claimed. Casting further doubt on the situation is the fact that the second photo appeared to be scrubbed of its metadata, preventing people from finding out when and where it was actually taken.

Coles also noted that, on July 11, Chao appeared to have a large blue coat on over the button-up shirt, a questionable decision given that Washington, D.C., is considerably hot at this point in the summer.

Coles further noted that she herself often wears the same shirts and blazers, as viewers of her podcast appearances might notice, and stressed that it is not impossible that Chao just happened to wear the same shirt two weeks apart. However, she also stressed that it was still a concerning detail, given the context of the mystery surrounding Chao's husband, "where we are very clearly not getting enough information."

Dougherty further highlighted comments from journalist Jeff Yang, who claimed to be a past acquaintance of Chao's family, having gone to school with two of her sisters. He noted that the shirt appeared to be a cheap offering from Chico's, something that the Chao he knew "would rather die" than be seen wearing.
