'Well planned out': Former FBI special agent shocked by sophistication of MN shooting

During a press conference on Saturday morning, June 14, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and other officials in his state gave reporters some details on the shootings of Minnesota State Sen. John A. Hoffman and Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, both members of the Democratic Farmer-Labor Party.

Walz confirmed to reporters, "This was an act of targeted political violence."

The suspect, according to Minnesota officials, remains at large and is the target of an aggressive manhunt.

Minnesota officials told reporters that the suspect impersonated a police officer and did so convincingly; one of them said the suspect's vehicle "looked exactly like a police vehicle."

Hortman, MSNBC confirmed, was killed — while Hoffman was still alive but undergoing surgery.

After covering the press conference, MSNBC's Ali Velshi brought on former FBI special agent Rob D'Amico. And both of them were struck by how convincingly the suspect pretended to be a law enforcement officer.

Velshi told D'Amico, "Rob, stuff came out of there that was surprising to both you and me, including the fact that this person presented, like, a police officer."

D'Amico told Velshi, "Yeah, just not like uniform, but a vehicle with assembled lights and everything. So my thing is: one, obviously very well planned out. Like this was not just a happenstance thing."

Velshi stressed that the suspect had standard police equipment, from a gun to a taser to the vehicle.

D'Amico told Velshi, "Was this police vehicle stolen, or did someone actually make one? Make one, which is even more troubling."
