Rep. Mike Lawler (R-New York), known for being a moderate conservative, weighed in on President-elect Donald Trump nominating family members for his administrations during a Wednesday, December 11 appearance on CNN.

CNN's John Berman noted the members of Trump's family he has picked for key positions, asking Lawler how "comfortable" he was with "this notion of keeping it in the family." Trump, for example, has picked Kimberly Guilfoyle, his son Donald Trump Jr.'s fiancée, for U.S. ambassador to Greece.

Lawler responded, "The question, to me, is whether or not the individual is qualified, not what their family relations are. If he feels that these individuals can best serve him in his administration, I don't have a problem with that. I think ultimately, at the end of the day — and I've been in and around politics for a long time — it's not like you're going to hire people who don't support you or are trying to undermine you."

When Berman challenged his position, the GOP congressman maintained, "If you feel that the best person to hire is somebody who happens to be related, certainly as long as it is legally permissible, no, I don't have an objection to that."
