United States Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) claimed on Tuesday's edition of The Rubin Report that school shootings are caused by complications from medications that treat anxiety and depression.

During her discussion with host Dave Rubin, Greene specifically blamed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which are prescribed to trigger the production of the neurotransmitter that plays a key role in regulating numerous biological functions.

As the Mayo Clinic explains, "SSRIs block the reabsorption (reuptake) of serotonin into neurons. This makes more serotonin available to improve transmission of messages between neurons. SSRIs are called selective because they mainly affect serotonin, not other neurotransmitters."

First, Greene parrotted a common right-wing proposal:

If this threat is – we see it over and over again – if it's going to keep going, well, you know what? We need to harden our schools and protect our kids, uh, the same way we protect gold money and banks, Hollywood celebrities, their big banquets, and award ceremonies. I believe that's what we should do.

Green then unveiled her hypothesis, for which she provided no evidence:

But I've asked this question. I think we need to finally take a look at SSRIs. We need to look at these medications for anxiety and depression, cuz I mean, pretty much every single one of these shooters is on or off these meds. Um, I've also wondered about this particular, uh, shooter in Nashville. Uh, what medications were they taking, if they were transitioned? How much testosterone? Because testosterone creates aggression, and if she's had too much in her body, how was that affected with SSRIs or whatever else? I think the American people deserve to know. I think, I think the coroner's report should be made public. It's time to have these discussions and then we need to make decisions there.

Rubin agreed, adding, "Right, that's gonna open up a whole other set of issues."
