'The completion of the insurrection': Joy Reid compares Marjorie Taylor Greene to Jefferson Davis

Joy Reid, host of MSNBC’s The ReidOut shared her candid reaction to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s new appointment of MAGA extremist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) to sit on the House Oversight Committee, comparing her to former U.S. president Jefferson Davis, Huffpost reports.

“We now know what MAGA Republican insurrectionists, conspiracy theorists and other national security risks will be up to for the next two years. And it should terrify you,” the host said in her opening remarks.

Reid went on to highlight Greene’s past participation in white supremacist conferences like the far-right America First Political Action Conference organized by white nationalist Nick Fuentes, which essentially makes her a “security threat" herself.

“Marjorie got a plumb spot on the homeland security committee,” she said. “So even though the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI have repeatedly said that white supremacists are the biggest domestic terrorism threat to our country, Kevin McCarthy gave someone who speaks at their conferences a seat on the committee that oversees homeland security.”

Reid also recalled when former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson testified to the Jan. 6 committee about her recollection of Greene’s antics leading up to the insurrection, saying the Georgia congresswoman had previously bragged about her many QAnon constituents and followers.

New York Times columnist Charles Blow spoke with Reid during the segment about his thoughts around Greene’s new appointment. But Reid first began the conversation by asserting, “This is the completion of the insurrection. This is as if Jefferson Davis was made the chairman of the Senate Oversight Committee or placed in charge of the United States Senate or the House.” She exclaimed, “This is placing, literally, the Confederate in charge of the Union.”

Blow replied, “I am no fan of Jefferson Davis, but Marjorie Taylor Greene is no Jefferson Davis.” He continued, “Marjorie Taylor Greene is just kind of a hollow shell of a person who believes, and actually is correct in believing, that theatrics get her attention and attention makes her money and money makes her powerful within her party. She’s a stunt queen. That’s what she does.”

Reid originally began the segment by noting the four GOP House members that McCarthy appointed to the House Oversight Committee, which included Greene. The other far-right members are Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Scott Perry (R-PA). All four, Reid mentioned, voted to overturn the 2020 election.

Blow continued his response by mentioning that Greene is the only House member out of the four who voted McCarthy for speaker, but noted “they were all taking him hostage.”

The columnist contented, “This is part of the ransom. [McCarthy] has to reward them. He has to play to them. Which is now why we’re going to have a Congress who barely functions. If you have people who do not believe in democracy – in this democracy — and basically out on the record that they don’t by their actions and positions they’ve taken, you cannot have a functioning democracy that works underneath those people.”
