GOP senator gloats: 'Republicans and Trump worked hard to overturn Roe v. Wade'

In a highly controversial decision handed down early Tuesday afternoon, April 9, the Arizona Supreme Court upheld a draconian anti-abortion law that was enacted back in 1864 — when Arizona was a still a territory and was 48 years away from achieving statehood.

The 1864 law was rendered unenforceable by the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 ruling in Roe v. Wade, which was overturned in 2022 by the Court's Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision. And the Arizona Supreme Court, on April 9, ruled that the 1864 law is enforceable under Dobbs.

Democratic officials in Arizona have been quick to attack the decision, including Gov. Katie Hobbs and State Attorney General Kris Mayes. And President Joe Biden's reelection campaign responded to the "cruel" and "extreme" Arizona ruling by attacking former President Donald Trump and pointing out that he paved the way for Dobbs.

Even Kari Lake, the far-right MAGA Republican and conspiracy theorist who is running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by centrist Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Arizona), has expressed her opposition to Arizona Supreme Court ruling — which, according to critics, is a total flip flop in light of her stridently anti-abortion history.

But Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) doubled down on her support of Dobbs and draconian abortion bans during an April 9 appearance on Fox Business.

Fox Business' Larry Kudlow noted that the Arizona Supreme Court ruling "upholds" a "near total" abortion ban that was "first enacted in 1864" and "codified in 1913," adding, "A lot of people of are running away from it. What do you make of it, mam?"

A glowing Ernst responded, "Well, hey, Larry, I am a mom. I am a brand-new grandma. And I support life. And Senate Republicans, the GOP, and President Trump really worked hard to overturn Roe v. Wade. So, we returned that back to the states. That is the law of the land with that Supreme Court decision. So, the states are handling that."

Ernst continued, "But again, we worked very hard to get this result. Now, the states will take that up."

Liberal activist Russell Drew slammed Ernst comments as a glaring example of the GOP's abortion problem.

On X, formerly Twitter, Drew posted, "Thank you Sen. Joni Ernst for this very special contribution to the Biden campaign. Republicans can't help themselves. They keep stepping in the mud and dirtying themselves up. Two years after Roe was thrown out, they still have no idea how to talk about abortion."
