Renowned comedian Jon Stewart is once again returning to the platform that helped him soar to international stardom after a nine-year hiatus.

Axios reported Wednesday that Stewart has been hired as both executive producer and Monday night host of the late-night political satire program The Daily Show on Comedy Central. The program will continue its pattern of rotating out a variety of guest hosts who offer their own humorous takes on current events.

"Jon Stewart is the voice of our generation, and we are honored to have him return to Comedy Central’s 'The Daily Show' to help us all make sense of the insanity and division roiling the country as we enter the election season," Chris McCarthy, President/CEO of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, said in a statement. "In our age of staggering hypocrisy and performative politics, Jon is the perfect person to puncture the empty rhetoric and provide much-needed clarity with his brilliant wit."

Stewart also announced his return to The Daily Show on his verified X/Twitter account, saying he had "decided to enter the transfer portal for my last year of eligibility."

Ever since former host Trevor Noah announced his departure from The Daily Show in 2022, the show's producers have been letting a diverse swath of comics and pundits take their turn at the desk, including comedians Leslie Jones, Sarah Silverman, Chelsea Handler and Charlamagne Tha God, among others. Monday nights — when Stewart is hosting — are typically the most-watched episodes of the week for The Daily Show, which broadcasts at 11 PM ET Mondays through Thursdays.

The legendary comedian had been hosting a show on Apple TV dubbed "The Problem with Jon Stewart," which featured both comedic segments and hard-hitting interviews with newsmakers. However, the show was cancelled in 2023 amid disagreements Stewart's creative team had with Apple over China and AI, according to the New York Times.

Jon Stewart's first night back at the desk will be on February 12, the day after the Super Bowl.
