Far-right 'attack dog' Jim Jordan now enjoys greater 'power' than ever before: report

Critics of Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, including some conservative Republicans, have long described the ultra-MAGA congressman as an example of style over substance. To Jordan’s detractors, he is a showman and a buffoon, not a serious lawmaker.
On the right, former House Speaker John Boehner detests Jordan and has described him as a “legislative terrorist.” And when former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was putting together a bipartisan select committee on the January 6, 2021 insurrection, she made it clear that Jordan would not be a part of it. Pelosi welcomed the participation of two right-wing GOP conservatives — then-Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and then-Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois — but she believed that Jordan’s theatrics would make a mockery of the committee.
But Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, now House speaker, regards Jordan as an ally. And according to a report for The Hill by journalists Rebecca Beitsch and Emily Brooks, the congressman and staunch Donald Trump defender now enjoys greater prominence in the U.S. House of Representatives than ever before.

In an article published on February 2, Beitsch and Brooks explain, “Once a thorn in the side of House GOP leaders, Jordan has been elevated to be a top attack dog against Democrats. With the new power to not only direct congressional hearings but utilize subpoenas, Jordan will be both a standard-bearer for the GOP base and a sculptor of the Washington political landscape for the next two years.”
After serving in the Ohio State Legislature for over a decade, Jordan was first elected to the U.S. House in 2006. That year, Democrats enjoyed a major blue wave thanks to frustration with the George W. Bush Administration and the war in Iraq. But Jordan entered Congress via a highly gerrymandered district and has been reelected eight times; he is now serving his ninth term and has been a key member of the far-right House Freedom Caucus.
During the Boehner-era House, making Jordan chairman of the House Judiciary Committee would have been unthinkable. Now, in the McCarthy-era House, Jordan holds that position.
“It’s a role that will leave the fiery Jordan front and center in representing the GOP, this time imbued with subpoena power as he works to arm-wrestle Biden Administration agencies previously under little obligation to comply with minority oversight,” Beitsch and Brooks note.
