Once a GOP stronghold, Virginia has evolved into a swing state and has arguably become the most Democrat-friendly state in the south. Nonetheless, Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin pulled off a narrow victory in Virginia's 2021 gubernatorial race by portraying himself as a business-minded Republican along the lines of Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) rather than as a bombastic, in-your-face MAGA culture warrior.

Nonetheless, Youngkin's critics in the Democratic Party have argued that he is not really as moderate as he pretends to be, noting that in 2022, he campaigned for far-right conspiracy theorist Kari Lake in Arizona's gubernatorial race. And the Virginia governor's detractors have been highly critical of his policies on abortion rights and transgender rights.

The subject of transgender rights came up during a Thursday night, March 9 townhall hosted by CNN. Youngkin, during the gathering, spoke to a transgender student who goes by Niko. And Youngkin's critics are accusing him of being evasive in response to a question the student asked.

Niko asked Youngkin, "Do you think the girls in my high school would feel comfortable sharing a restroom with me?" And the Virginia governor responded, "I believe first, when parents are engaged with their children, you can make good decisions together. I also think there are lots of students involved in this decision."

Youngkin, who is reportedly considering a 2024 presidential run, was obviously trying to appear moderate during the event, telling Niko, "Again, I think these are very difficult discussions, and I am very, very glad to see you and your dad here together."

On Twitter, the Virginia governor's critics were quick to speak out. Attorney and podcast host Neil Rockind, @neilrockindlaw, tweeted, "Word salad. Speech filler. Stumble. Filler. Thank you."

Twitter user Tanzia Mill, @TanziaMill — a self-described "proud Democrat" — posted, "I kept waiting for Youngkin to actually answer the question.... I mean, really answer the question. He never does. Youngkin brings up the idea of having a 'separate' bathroom facility, but he never answers the question! The young man keeps his composure — don't know if I could!"

Kim Eckert, another Twitter user, commented, "Brave young man. Coward old man. Youngkin didn't answer his question. But! He met his father!"

@MnMike55408 humorously wrote, "With fancy footwork like that, (Glenn) should be on Dancing With The Stars. Maybe just a tap dance solo."
