After President Donald Trump named far-right podcaster Dan Bongino as the new deputy director of the FBI — a position that does not require Senate confirmation — one prominent anti-Trump conservative is warning that the president's political enemies may soon find themselves at the mercy of politically motivated harassment.

In a Monday interview with MSNBC host Jen Psaki, George Conway (who was previously married to former Trump senior advisor Kellyanne Conway) opined that Trump elevating Bongino to be the #2 official at the FBI speaks volumes about how the bureau will conduct future investigations. He noted that, along with FBI Director Kash Patel, neither one of the FBI's top two officials have any previous experience leading investigations (Bongino was with the New York Police Department in the 1990s before joining the U.S. Secret Service).

"It's got nothing to do with actually running the FBI as a law enforcement agency. It has to do with owning the libs," Conway said. "There's a little bit of that with Donald Trump. He hates the FBI."

Conway went on to point out that Trump has harbored a grudge against the FBI ever since the bureau raided his Mar-a-Lago residence in 2022 as part of its classified documents investigation. He then observed that even though the case was, in his words, "open and shut," Bongino said on his podcast that "everybody associated with that case should be fired."

"It's really about revenge. It's about owning his enemies. And also it's about retribution," Conway continued. "It's just ingrained in him. He wants retribution against his enemies,"

"These are the two perfect people to run an FBI that's controlled by a president who's a criminal," he added.
