'They’re all bad': George Conway explains GOP’s 'political calculus' with 'crazy' Trump DOJ picks

Although attorney George Conway is a veteran of the conservative legal movement, he aggressively supported Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election and another Democratic presidential nominee, Kamala Harris, four years later. President Donald Trump is now three and one-half months into his nonconsecutive second term, which Conway — a scathing critic of Trump and the far-right MAGA movement — views as a nonstop assault on the rule of law.
During an appearance on The Bulwark's vodcast posted on May 8, Conway offered some insights on the state of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) during Trump's second presidency.
Conway told host Sarah Longwell — a political strategist and fellow Never Trump conservative — "The politics of this day are not about right and left anymore. They're not about Republican and Democrats. It's about right and wrong."

Conway weighed in on Trump's decision to put Fox News host Jeanine Pirro in charge of the U.S. Department of Justice's (DOJ) Washington DC office rather than MAGA attorney Ed Martin, a defender of the rioters who attacked the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6, 2021.
Conway said of "election denier" Martin, "He was writing all kinds of crazy letters to people, kind of threatening them. Members of Congress….. He's buddies with (Robert F. Kennedy Jr.)….. He wasn't the actual U.S. attorney, but he was an interim U.S. attorney."
Longwell lamented that many of Trump's picks — from Martin to FBI Director Kash Patel to National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard — have been woefully "unqualified." And Conway agreed, saying, "They're all bad" but noting that many GOP senators are afraid to reject Trump's nominees.
Conway told Longwell, "I think it's all political. The political calculus here is if you say no to the president on people who are down the chain, he's going to get less mad at you — and the MAGAs are going to get less mad at you…. The cover for them now is: We voted for all these people. "
