Former United States Senator Doug Jones (D-Alabama) this weekend warned that a 2024 No Labels third-party presidential candidate could sway the election away from President Joe Biden in favor of the Republican nominee, who according to current polling is likely to be twice-indicted ex-President Donald Trump.

Democratic No Labels Co-Chair Ben Chavis stated to NBC News on Thursday that the organization "is not and will not be a spoiler in favor of Donald Trump in 2024" and that "after Super Tuesday next year [and] before the [No Labels] convention in Dallas in April, there will be a decision." Chavis added that "if we find that the polls are changed and Joe Biden is way, way out ahead, and the person who the Republicans may choose — and if they continue to choose Donald Trump, even though he's been indicted — then No Labels will stand down."

On Sunday, MSNBC host Katie Phang asked Jones, "In your own words for our viewers, why does No Labels pose such a credible threat to President Biden's reelection?"

Jones listed several reasons.

"Well, it's pretty simple," Jones said. "I think, you know, that faction of the Republican Party is not going to split up. They're not gonna do anything and move away from Donald Trump or whoever the Republican nominee is. But I think it's gonna be Donald Trump. They're just not gonna move off of that. The only things that may move might be votes that would otherwise go to Joe Biden, just like they did in 2020. So this is a, you know, I, I think that a vote for No Labels is a vote for Donald Trump. It is that simple. And I am concerned that with all the money that No Labels has right now, that they're putting out what sounds on its face to be a very good message."

Jones then stressed that "when you really drill down on it, there's no way that they can win. There's no way that they can get 270 electoral votes. They could throw it into the House of Representatives. And when they do that, Donald Trump is elected again. And as Doug Brinkley so, I think, just incredibly articulated a few minutes ago, that is the greatest threat to democracy that we've seen in this country."
