Ex-GOP strategist: Democrats should 'never bring up' Hunter Biden because voters 'don’t care'

Veteran political consultant Matthew Dowd told MSNBC on Tuesday that Democrats should "never bring up" Hunter Biden because targeting relatives of the First Family has never "worked" with voters.

President Joe Biden's son is the subject of multiple investigations led by Republicans in the United States House of Representatives at the same time that the Department of Justice is prosecuting criminal indictments against former President Donald Trump. But Dowd believes that the electorate is concerned with policies that directly impact its daily existence.

"In the course of this, my feeling about this Hunter Biden stuff is it didn't work when they brought up Neil Bush with President Bush, his brother. It didn't work with the half-brother Roger Clinton. It didn't work with Billy Carter," Dowd said. "And if independent voters are hearing from the GOP and the Trump campaign about Hunter Biden come next fall, and what they're hearing from Joe Biden and the Democrats is Social Security, reproductive freedom, the fate of our democracy, Social Security, all those things, they're much stronger position because at that point. The swing voters don't want to hear about Hunter Biden. They wanna hear about what matters to them at their table."

When asked how Democrats should reply to questions about Hunter Biden on the campaign trail, Dowd recommended avoiding the subject entirely.

"I think they should never bring up Hunter Biden. They should say, 'That's not what the American public cares about. What the American public cares about is X, Y, and Z,'" Dowd opined. "What the Hunter Biden stuff does is it feeds the red meat to the GOP base who likes to hear about this in the course of this. But in the end, the people that are gonna decide these elections, those swing voters in key states, don't care about Hunter Biden. They care about what's going on in their life and the issues that matter to them and what's happening with our constitutional republic. And so if one campaign is talking about that and the other campaign has ventured off into Hunter Biden, then I would much rather prefer it with the former than the latter."

Dowd added that "I think anybody that looks at this is, one's the president of the United States and the other one is the son of the president of the United States, which there's been no link between the son and the father on business dealings," referring to the allegations of corruption that Republicans have lobbed toward the Bidens.

"And so, in my view, that's it," Dowd concluded. "You know that the Bidens could win that argument. But I would argue is, don't even get in the argument. Just go straight to the issues that matter to the swing voters in the country. You're on better ground there."
