Trump can’t 'physically deal' with reality where he has no power: Carville

Former Bill Clinton aide James Carville says President Donald Trump will be pushed to his breaking point if things don’t go his way in the upcoming midterm election. During the latest episode of Politcon’s Politics War Room with James Carville & Al Hunt, Carville predicted the potential fallout for Trump is grand.

“What’s on my mind is what is the number that just disgraces Trump? I mean, is it 238 House seats? Is it 54 Senate seats?” Carville said. “If it ends up 225 House seats and 50-50 Senate broke by a tie by JD Vance, [then] he’s able to play another day. If it goes too big — I got hit by this in ’94. If they get hit like that, he can’t respond to it. He’s just physically not able to deal with what’s coming his way. We won’t know till [the] election now. There is a number that almost makes him, other than designated articulated powers, he has no other power.”

Carville’s prediction comes amid growing speculation about Trump’s mental and physical health. Trump, 80, and White House representatives have denied that his health has deteriorated. However, critics and observers have raised concerns, pointing to what they describe as his increasingly tired appearance and seemingly scattered speeches on the campaign trail.

Carville was working for President Bill Clinton in 1994 when Democrats suffered a major midterm election defeat. Republicans won control of both the House and Senate for the first time since 1952, a historic shift known as the “Republican Revolution.” Trump now faces the possibility of a similar political setback, depending on the outcome of the 2026 midterm elections.

Carville argued that Trump has lost more supporters than he is willing to acknowledge. He added that Trump is out of touch with the public if he believes Americans aren’t ready for change — particularly a change that moves the country beyond his leadership.

“The consequences of this cleansing that some people think we had to go through that was beneficial are $2 trillion in debt, an unwinnable war that we stuck in, an acceleration of what I think is the biggest social problem facing the United States — maybe in history — is the massive inequality that’s in this country [which has been] nothing but exacerbated by his tax package,” Carville said. “So, but yes, I think that Tuesday the body politic will have extricated Trump from the bloodstream, but the residual damage he leaves is pretty heavy.”
